The primary function of the Department is to collect
and account for customs and excise taxes. Some of the taxes collected include

The Government of Kenya have contracted
2 companies to carry out pre-shipment inspection. Various categories of imports
are subjected to pre shipment inspection while others are exempted. The 2 companies
are: 1. Cotecna Inspection S.A. .
Inspects goods originating from: South Africa, Japan, UK, South America, Australia
